May 23

Artist in Residency Final Presentation

Talk and Open Studio
23th of May, 4pm

In an informal talk Alžběta Bačíková will speak about her latest project titled: …and she told me: “Cut down the tree, sell the house, lay your father to rest.” she has been developing since last year. This complicated title refers to a phrase expressing an important tasks a man should accomplish to become an adult and successfull in fulfilling his role. Artist plays with invertion of its meaning and touches deeply personal experiences to speak on transformative potential of crisis, failure, death and depression.

In a free continuation of the project at the residency in Schaumbad she has been working on a few embroideries using antidepressants and found textiles as materials for handmade objects. At the same time she explores folk tradition of stitching and visual patterns appearing on costumes and decorative objects from the region of Horňácko (south Moravia, Czech Republic) where her mother comes from. A bodily experiences of both a pleasure or trauma transform into an images to emerge on the fragile embroidered assemblages through compositions of pills, threads and thin latex membranes.
