GIF – Grazer Impro Fest – Donnerstag 29.08.2024

Das Schaumbad – Freies Atelierhaus Graz öffnet erneut seine Tore für das Ungeplante: Das zweite Grazer Impro Fest erwartet euch. Sieben Tage lang wird Haus und Natur für Künstler:innen, Kollektive und Neugierige freigeräumt. Alle sind eingeladen, mitzuklingen, zuzuhören, vorbeizuschauen oder einfach dort zu sein. Es gibt keine Grenzen, höchstens Perforationen an den erlernten Schwellen zwischen Performance und Publikum.
Und damit die Grenzen auch wirklich fernbleiben, breitet sich das Vielfältige aus – nicht nur beim Origami. Skaten, Musizieren und KI passen genauso zusammen wie Utopie und Kochen. Denn die Magic entsteht sowieso im gemeinsamen Tun und Nichtstun. Es ist genug Platz für laute wie auch stille Teilhabe. Apropos: Nichts geht über Partyzipation. Auch gefeiert wird gemeinsam, und zwar richtig schön improvisiert.

16:00 LECTURE: Christopher A. Williams – „Improvising Music from/with nothing: myths, realities, and the washtub bass“
Experimentelle improvisierende Musiker*innen feiern oft die Idee, dass Musik (fast) aus dem Nichts entstehen kann. Diese Münze hat zwei Seiten. Einerseits eine »positive Freiheit«: Durch den Verzicht auf Partituren, Pläne, Idiome, konventionelle Technik usw. können wir einen Raum für spontane Entdeckungen, neue Klangwelten und eine umfassende Ästhetik schaffen. Andererseits eine »negative Freiheit«: Musiker*innen, die mit minimalen Mitteln »einen Weg aus dem Nichts« schaffen – als kreative Antwort auf die Zwänge repressiver sozioökonomischer Situationen wie auch auf die vermeintlich lockeren stilistischen und kulturellen Beschränkungen. Im Vortrag werden einige Mythen und Realitäten untersucht und aufgezeigt, wie positive und negative Freiheiten sich in der improvisierten Musik überschneiden. Als Partner in der Not dient der Waschwannenbass (alias »Saugeige«), der von nordamerikanischen Sklaven erfunden wurde.
Christopher A. Williams (1981, San Diego) macht und erforscht (hauptsächlich) experimentelle Musik. Er ist Koordinator und Forscher im Projekt »(Musikalische) Improvisation und Ethik« an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz.

17:30 WORKSHOP: Denovaire – „UTOPIA“ (Anmeldung unter https://bit.ly/gif-utopia) 
Die futuristische Stadt bekommt eine klangliche Manifestation! Alltag, Transport, soziales Netz, Leben von Mensch und Maschine. In diesem Workshop erkunden wir die klanglichen Möglichkeiten unserer Instrumente und erzeugen eine immersive »soundscape« mit dislozierten Ensembles im Rahmen einer Improvisation. Das Publikum sitzt, geht, tanzt schweigend zwischen und bei den Ensembles, trinkt Tee, spielt Schach, arbeitet … und bildet mit den Klängen die Stadtsphäre. Denovaire… hat die Musikakademien besucht und vergessen. Er komponiert zeitgenössische und cineastische Klänge.

20:00 GATHERING: Bernadette Laimbauer – „Labour Leisure Pleasure Pressure“
In ihrer künstlerischen Praxis verwickelt Bernadette Laimbauer das Publikum in intime Rituale, die intuitives Reagieren im Moment erfordern. Dieses Gathering gibt sich als Erkundungsreise im Spannungsfeld zwischen Erholung und Anspannung, Aktivität und Nichtstun, Langeweile und Überforderung. Endstation ist die Schaffung einer temporär idealisierten Realität. Laimbauer verbindet Elemente der darstellenden und bildenden Kunst. Aktuell lehrt sie an der Kunstuni in Linz. und betreibt die »Artist-run space« Geschäftsstelle in der Weststeiermark.

Schaumbad – Freies Atelierhaus Graz is once again opening its doors to the unplanned: the second Graz Impro Fest awaits you. For seven days, the house and nature will be cleared for artists, collectives and the curious. Everyone is invited to join in, listen, drop by or simply be there. There are no boundaries, only perforations at the learned thresholds between performance and audience. And to ensure that the boundaries really do stay out of the way, diversity spreads – and not just in origami. Skating, making music and AI go together just as well as utopia and cooking. Because magic is created by doing and doing nothing together anyway. There is enough space for both loud and quiet participation. Speaking of which: nothing beats party participation. We also celebrate together, and in a really improvised way.

Experimental improvising musicians often celebrate the idea that music can be created (almost) out of nothing. This coin has two sides. On the one hand, a “positive freedom”: by dispensing with scores, plans, idioms, conventional technique, etc., we can create a space for spontaneous discoveries, new soundscapes and a comprehensive aesthetic. On the other hand, a “negative freedom”: musicians who create “a way out of nothing” with minimal means – as a creative response to the constraints of repressive socio-economic situations as well as to the supposedly loose stylistic and cultural restrictions. The lecture will examine some myths and realities and show how positive and negative freedoms intersect in improvised music. The washtub bass (aka “Saugeige”), which was invented by North American slaves, serves as a partner in adversity.
Christopher A. Williams (1981, San Diego) makes and researches (mainly) experimental music. He is coordinator and researcher in the project “(Musical) Improvisation and Ethics” at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

The futuristic city gets a sonic manifestation! Everyday life, transportation, social network, life of man and machine. In this workshop, we will explore the sonic possibilities of our instruments and create an immersive soundscape with dislocated ensembles as part of an improvisation. The audience sits, walks, dances silently between and near the ensembles, drinks tea, plays chess, works … and forms the urban sphere with the sounds. Denovaire… has attended and forgotten the music academies. He composes contemporary and cinematic sounds.

In her artistic practice, Bernadette Laimbauer involves the audience in intimate rituals that require intuitive reactions in the moment. This Gathering is an exploratory journey in the field of tension between relaxation and tension, activity and doing nothing, boredom and excessive demands. The final destination is the creation of a temporarily idealized reality. Laimbauer combines elements of the performing and visual arts. She is currently teach at the University of Art in Linz. and runs the “Artist-run space” office in western Styria.
